Emergence of sterile Queensland fruit fly was assessed at the Camden mass-production facility and at the Yanco release centre in New South Wales between November 2002 and January 2005.  Pupal weight was positively and significantly related to the percentage emergence at both Camden and at Yanco.  However, average emergence rates fell from 82.1% at Camden to 68.4% at Yanco.  The date of larval hopping at Camden influenced percentage emergence.  Pupal weights for the 4th, 5th and 6th days of larval hopping were more likely to significantly influence the percentage emergence of flies than it did on the first three days of hopping.

FLETCHER, M.J. The identity of Pascoepus viridiceps (Evans) based on recognition of the male and a new species of  Zaletta from Barrow Island, Western Australia (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Idiocerinae). …………………………… 13

The male of Pascoepus viridiceps (Evans) is described for the first time based on a series of specimens from Barrow Island, Western Australia.  The male genitalia are illustrated and compared with those of other species of the genus. P. viridiceps; shows affinity with P. hyeorais (Kirkaldy) and P. nymphias (Kirkaldy).  Zaletta webbi sp. nov., also from Barrow Island, is described and compared with other species of the genus.

HERRON, G.A. and JAMES, T.M. Insecticide resistance in Australian populations of Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). ……………………………………………………………………………………………… 1

Insecticides are the main method of Western Flower Thrips (WFT) control in Australia and their effective management is underpinned by resistance monitoring of field populations.  Surveys conducted between 2003 and 2006 did not detect resistance to acctamiprid, dimethoatc, methamidophos or thiamethoxam but, low level resistance was detected against abamcctin, acephate, chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, endosulfan, fipronil, malathion, methidathion, methiocarb and methomyl.  Worryingly, high level resistance was detected to alpha-cypermcthrin (25x) and spinosad (87x).  Spinosad is now the most widely used registered product for WFT control.  Loss of spinosad would jeopardise the WFT control strategy so it is imperative that the resistance is effectively managed.

NOACK, A.E. and ROSE H.A. Life-history of Thaumastocoris peregrinus and Thaumastocoris sp. in the laboratory with some observations on behaviour. ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………… 27

Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero and Dellape is a new pest of Eucalyptus in Sydney and southern South Africa and has recently arrived in Argentina.  Recently another as yet undescribed species of this genus was discovered and is an emerging pest of Corymbia in Sydney.  Laboratory studies were undertaken to elucidate life history parameters of both species such as instar duration, adult longevity and reproductive potential.  At 17-22°C the eggs of both species hatched in approximately six days.  The duration of the five stadia were similar in both species: with T. peregrinus taking approximately 4.6, 3.5, 3.3, 3.7 and 5.3 days, while T. sp. 4.7, 3.4, 3.5, 4.0 and 5.2 days.  The adult males and females of both Thaumastocoris spp. can live for approximately 40 days and females can produce at least 60 eggs during that time.  The laying of virgin eggs is reported for this genus.
